How often do you stop to really think about the way you communicate with others? Too often we are moving so fast that we dump the information we need to share and move on before we even confirm that what we’ve said has been understood the way we intended. And worse, we don’t take the time to truly listen to the full response from the person we just dumped on, potentially leaving them frustrated and feeling devalued.
In this episode, we’ll explore the effective communication cycle and I’ll share with you several strategies that you can implement to improve your ability to engage employees at a higher level so you can really listen to what they are saying.

To help you stay nimble, here is this week’s Take Action Challenge. Take these 3 action steps in the next week.
1. In the next week, try setting an intention before your more significant interactions. For example, if you are having a meeting with a group of people, begin by stating what your intentions are for the meeting and what you hope to accomplish. If you need to meet one-on-one with an employee, take a few moments prior to the meeting to get clear on your intention for that meeting and consider sharing it with them at the start. Remember, intention helps you to be clear on what your purpose is prior to a conversation and sharing it allows others to trust know that purpose as well and help keep the conversation on track.
2. This one may feel a little strange to some of you, but it’s a tremendous learning tool if you can get over being camera shy. That’s right, I said camera. If you’ve never seen a video of yourself communicating, do yourself a huge favor and have someone record you with their phone and share the video with you. When I do my effective presentations program I always incorporate video into the process and often it is the first time people have a chance to really see themselves as others do. If you will be communicating to a group or speaking at a meeting in the next week, take this opportunity to record yourself and review it. Did you accomplish what you intended? How was your word choice, tone and body language? Trust me, the video doesn’t lie and you will learn so much about your communication style.
3. Review the methods you are currently using to ensure you are listening to what your team members have to say. Are they effective? If you don’t do some form of group feedback session, like a quality circle, I highly recommend that you schedule one in the next week. Explain to people ahead of time that you are looking for honest feedback and be open to receiving whatever they share. Use good active listening skills. Avoid becoming defensive as it will immediately shut down your flow of information. Thank them for their participation and then do something with the information. If this process is new to your team it may take a couple for them to trust that there won’t be any retaliation for what they share in the meeting. The better listener you are, the more they will open up with their feedback.
